Uncirculated U.S. Mint Sets

U.S. Mint Sets, also known as uncirculated or “mint” sets, are collections of coins struck for circulation but preserved before entering the economy. These sets are typically issued by the U.S. Mint each year and packaged for collectors. Unlike proof sets, which feature specially polished dies and mirror-like finishes, mint sets showcase coins in their standard uncirculated condition, often with minor toning or marks from the minting process.

Many older sets, especially from the 1940s–1960s, were issued in cardboard holders or envelopes and are now sought after both for their historical value and original packaging.
Please note: No official U.S. Mint Sets were issued in 1982 or 1983. Instead, limited souvenir sets were sold at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. These are harder to find and often carry a premium.

Below you’ll find a selection of such sets, beginning with the 1947 Double Mint Set, the first of its kind.
Entries shown are currently part of my collection.

1947 U.S. Uncirculated Double Mint Set (click to expand)

Issued by: United States Mint

Set type: 1947 Double Mint Set (Uncirculated)

Packaging: Paperboard holders inside a manila envelope. One card for each mint.

Coins included (two of each):

  • Lincoln Wheat Cent – Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco
  • Jefferson Nickel – Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco
  • Roosevelt Dime – Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco
  • Washington Quarter – Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco
  • Walking Liberty Half Dollar – Philadelphia and Denver (no San Francisco halves in 1947) Contains four Walking Liberty halves in total.

1947 was the first year the U.S. Mint offered these Double Mint Sets, and it is the only year in which the classic Walking Liberty half appears in the series. Each denomination is presented twice per mint, giving collectors two fresh examples of every coin struck that year.

Most sources estimate that approximately 5,000 sets of the 1947 Double Mint Set were produced, based on U.S. Mint delivery records and numismatic references including APMEX and MintSetGuide. While some older sources cite a higher number, the true mintage remains unconfirmed. What is certain is that far fewer survive today in original mint packaging, compared with home-assembled or repackaged sets in aftermarket holders. The PCGS Price Guide currently values an intact 1947 Double Mint Set at around $2,050, reflecting both its scarcity and historical significance as the first of its kind.

The paper stock used for the holders was rich in sulfur, which has produced the distinctive “Mint-Set” toning seen on many original sets, including the one offered here.
