The Mexican Silver Libertad, often referred to as the “Onza,” is one of the most recognizable silver bullion coins produced by the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the oldest mint in North America, founded in 1535. Struck in .999 fine silver, the Libertad has earned a strong reputation among both investors and collectors due to its limited mintages, classic artwork, and connection to Mexican history.

Unlike many government bullion coins, the Silver Libertad does not carry a stamped face value. The Banco de Mexico chose instead to allow the coin’s worth to be determined by the market value of silver along with collector demand and premium.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver
  • Produced by the Mexican Mint (Casa de Moneda de Mexico)
  • Known for lower mintages compared to many world bullion coins
  • Highly collectible bullion issue
  • Features one of the most iconic designs in modern silver bullion

Reverse Design

The reverse showcases the famous Winged Victory statue, also known as El Angel de la Independencia, located in Mexico City. The angel holds a laurel wreath symbolizing victory and broken chains representing freedom and independence. The coin’s weight, purity, and year of issue are also displayed in Spanish.

Obverse Design

The obverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms featuring an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak. Surrounding the central emblem are historic versions of Mexico’s coat of arms used throughout the nation’s history.

Collectibility

Silver Libertads are well known for their combination of bullion value and collectible appeal. Early “Onza” style Libertads and later issues alike remain popular due to their limited production numbers, distinctive satin-like finish, and strong recognition within the global precious metals market.
